Anti-Counterfeiting / Intellectual Property Crime
April 17, 2008: Alberta Emergency Management Agency, and the Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security co-hosted an information session for senior government officials on intellectual property crime. Presentations were made by Mike Manson of the Canadian Anti-Counterfeiting Network (CACN), Cst. Jill Ross of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Warren McInnis of Underwriters Laboratories (UL). The session was held in conjunction with the 2008 CACN Canadian Reality Tour stop in Edmonton, a cross-Canada educational initiative to raise awareness and combat product counterfeiting and copyright piracy.
The presentations showed clearly that this is a global issue with significant public safety implications. Intellectual property crime costs the Canadian government $20 - $30 billion annually.
